Laundry Manual

Intaglio, 11.5" x 12", 2026

Sketching

Most sketching was done during the research phase, and then realized in the sketch of the activity. Research involved studies of hands using tools relating to washing.

Sketching consisted of composition adjustment to give the comic a stronger first-person perspective. This gave the piece a more real mood, somewhat straying from conventional instruction manuals.

Print Preparation

Initially, the dimensions of the original plate posed an issue. Being unable to fit text below the second row of panels, the piece transformed into a collage.

Using Japanese paper, panels were cut out of their original prints, and then printed onto another sheet of paper, sealing them into one piece, and allowing for more control with the dimensions of the work.

To achieve a sense of wear, differing colors in inks were used for each color paper to closer match the value of the paper used. Text for the yellow page was written by a volunteer.
